With a history of 2300 years, the Port of Ningbo has been a gateway to the world in China. For 30 years, the Port has been serving as the powerhouse of the city, leading the ancient city to the oceans and to the world. And the port itself has joined the first ranks in the world. In 2009 the port handled a throughput of 384 million tons, having kept the second place in China and fourth place in the world. The container throughput once again broke through 10 million TEUs, standing at 10 million 423 thousand TEU, which was among the top eight in the world. 

The Port of Ningbo boasts particular deep-water advantages. To the north it has the Zhoushan Islands as the natural shelter, with the approach channels all below 22.1 meters deep, capable of receiving 300,000 DWT vessels. Each year it receives the biggest number of 100,000 DWT vessels among all mainland ports. 

The Port consists of six harbor areas-Yongjiang Port area, Zhenhai, Beilun, Daxie and Chuanshan and Meishan, with 315 berths seated along the golden coastline that stretches over 50 kilometers. 74 of them can accommodate 10,000 DWT vessels. These berths, of various sizes, have formed into a multifunctional cluster offering all-around services. Now it is a major transfer base and storage base of containers, iron ore, crude oil and liquefied chemicals of China and transfer base of coal, grains and bulk cargo in East China. 

The Port is located in the Yangtze River Delta, with complete networks of expressways, highways and railways. With the opening of the grand Hangzhou Bay Bridge and the Zhoushan-Ningbo Bridge, the Port enjoys even more facile transport conditions, thus putting the port development on an expressway. 

The Port boasts the state-of-the-art facilities for container handling, which can meet the needs of a very-large container ship of over 10,000 TEUs. Meanwhile, it has set up a complete logistic system with its ocean going container fleet, container truck fleet, forward-booking platform, and freight-forwarding. In recent years it has been know for its Ningbo Port Speed. Presently, the top 20 shipping companies of the world have their agencies set up in the Port. So far it has opened 220 container lines to other countries and regions, including 110 ocean-going lines; and the scheduled container liners total 900 each month, reaching 600 ports of over 100 countries and regions. The container routes of the Port have made China-made products more accessible in the world. 

On March 31 2008, with the initiation of the Ningbo Port Group the Ningbo Port Incorporated Co was set up, incorporating 7 companies, signifying another stride made forward for the Port. 

Through the development of No-water Port and sea-rail through transport, the Port has formed a new development pattern featuring linkage development and coordinated development of main business and auxiliary business. Guided by the philosophy of “respect, care and integrity”, the port provides round-the-clock anchoring services for shipping companies. Meanwhile, it implements a strategy of vitalizing the port through science and technology, proactively promotes information-based and network-based services. Its container handling efficiency has kept setting new records. The port has developed a port image featuring quality, safety, efficiency and facile services. It has won the honors of National Civil Work Units for years running. 

In recent years state leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, and Jia Qinglin have successively visited Ningbo Port. They expressed the hope that the Port shall not lag behind others in 100 years.
